Tomfoolery

posted by:

My sister told me last night that her word of the week is “tomfoolery.” She was telling me that she had just learned that it was all one word; for some reason she had thought it was two words. That surprised me, but I agreed it was a fun word. So when I saw an article about website hosting by a company called Fat Cow I just had to laugh. I wondered who in the world would think of such a silly name?

Thinking about it, I wondered if they were thinking that this “Fat Cow” company would be a “cash cow” for them. And I wondered why they didn’t just name the company Cash Cow. Maybe someone else already took that name. Anyway, this piqued my interest and I started clicking around and found a story about how this Fat Cow company was striving to make it’s company as ecologically friendly as possible. That made me think of how much fun they could have with an internal newsletter about the company with the headline reading “greener pastures for Fat Cow.”

I’d like to think it would be fun to work for a company that has a sense of humor like that.

New Year’s Eve

posted by:

This year I decided to stay in for New Year’s Eve. I watched a couple of television shows and turned to Dick Clark’s televised party from Times Square to watch the ball drop. I had my laptop on my lap, while sitting on the sofa and sipping some asti spumante. I have a couple of friends that went up to Times Square to join the party and was reading their occasional facebook post about how much their high heels were hurting their feet. I wondered why they didn’t wear sensible shoes and was really glad that I’ve gotten over that need to wear high heels in order to feel that I look good. I do have to admit, though, that the shoe designers don’t do enough for women in the designing pretty shoes that don’t hurt your feet! They must be sadists!

The personality tests

posted by:

Recently I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about determining what kind of personality you are, and the others around you. The whole idea is that if you understand the different personality types it will be easier to get along with everyone and forgive their weaknesses, and celebrate their strengths. I’ve taken the little personality quiz and have to say that when I’m given the four different choices of which is “more” me, that I really have to say that I am ALL of the choices, not more one than the other. So I have the strengths of all of the choices, and darn few of the weaknesses of any of them. Yet I am too modest to claim myself to be perfect. Does that make me a good person, or a bad person? I don’t know, I really don’t.

Don’t sweat the small stuff

posted by:

One of my all time favorite sayings is “don’t sweat the small stuff – and it’s all small stuff.” I know that is the title of a book, and if I recall correctly I bought that book a couple of weeks ago when I found a bunch of great used books on the goodwillbooks.com website. I ordered about ten books all at once because they were all under a dollar each. There just are not enough hours in the day for me to read all of the books that I want to read and still do all of the work that I need to get done.

Anyway, the starting point of this post was really to lament the observation that too many people get way too upset over trivial little details. Making mountains out of mole hills, starting arguments over nothing. It really is such a shame that so much energy is poured into so much negativity. We could accomplish so much more as a human race if we could turn that energy into positive energy!

A walk down memory lane

posted by:

One of the things I enjoy about our family gatherings is the fact that one of my brothers took a lot of our old family 8mm silent movies and converted them onto a DVD. He puts it on and it runs the entire time we are partying – there are many hours of entertainment to be had watching them! One of my favorite videos that he converted was a movie that my older sister had staged as a school assignment of some kind.

She was the director, and my boyfriend and I were the stars of the show. The scene started in one of the bigger neighborhood parks. At the time it was supposed to be a romantic comedy of boy chases girl to steal a kiss. Thinking about that, nowadays that would be a scary stalker movie! The video starts out with the female star (me) sitting in a covered shelter filled with Picnic Tables. I was eating an apple while reading a book. My boyfriend sneaked up behind me, tapped me on my shoulder and when I turned around he plants a kiss on my lips! Then I slapped him across his cheek and started to run. And he started to chase. The chase was in the style of the Keystone Cops. We ran over top of Park Benches, through the various forms of playground equipment, going down slides, ended up running out into the neighborhood and “stealing” bicycles and tricycles to continue the chase.

Of course it all sounds so lame, but when my family sees that video, the room rocks with peals of laughter at our silliness. Sometimes a walk down memory lane can be good fun.
