Saving for college tuition

posted by:

Back when I was concerned about saving money for my children’s college tuition, there was only one online program that I knew about – the Upromise website. I signed up for that but in the decades of shopping I only managed to raise about forty dollars for my children’s college expenses. Now I understand that there is a new website called Mission Tuition that is designed to do the same thing – help consumers save money for their children’s college expenses.

Looking at their list of participating retailers, I have to admit that if I were to be opening a new account to save money for someone’s college expenses that I would not hesitate to join this site. They offer some coupons and discounts at a lot of the stores that I normally frequent. If you are a young parent, I think that checking out this website would be a smart thing to do if you are concerned about saving money for your children’s college expenses. It’s sooner than you think.

Chocolate cake with chocolate fudge icing

posted by:

Today we celebrated Randy’s 30th birthday. I stopped at the local supermarket and asked them to decorate a chocolate cake with chocolate fudge icing with blue icing and the words “Happy Birthday Randy” on it. I wanted to have them write “30th” on the cake too, but I didn’t want to call extra attention to the age milestone. I know that he has not been looking forward to turning 30. I don’t understand why that is the case, but I do know that he has been cranky all week about it. I hope that he gets over it pretty soon. No one likes being around a gloomy Gus.

The cake was VERY chocolate-y. I usually can eat a large piece of cake, but since I had two slices of pizza before we had cake I only had room for a small slice. I hope there will be some leftover to raid tomorrow!

Molten lava cakes

Have you ever tried one of those molten lava cakes as a dessert from a restaurant? They are so delicious! I especially enjoy them if the add a scoop of ice cream, or add a dollop of whipped cream. Recently I saw some “muffins” for sale at Wal-Mart that they called triple fudge muffins. Well, these muffins really are cupcakes, with a chocolate fudge cream center. I bought a package of them to try them out. They have three individually wrapped muffins inside. I decided to unwrap one, put it on a saucer plate and microwaved it for ten seconds. When it came out of the microwave I put a squirt of canned whipped cream on it. Tasted just like those molten lava cakes from the restaurant! Feels like a luxurious treat. I’ve got to be careful, though, chocolate gives me heartburn sometimes.

Address plaques are more important than ever

posted by:

Last week I had a doctor’s appointment in a section of town that I haven’t been to before. I used my GPS to get me to the street address, but I was a little bit taken aback because the street address was for the entire high rise building. I don’t know who designed the building, but whoever it was must have been a masochist because finding my way around the place was a complete nightmare. There were elevators scattered around the place that only went up a floor or two and stairways that were only half of a level of stairs and then dumped me out to a dead end hallway.

Every now and then I would find a couple of bronze address plaques that identified the rooms behind them. Sadly none of them were the office that I was looking for. Looking around for a building directory and floor plan, I couldn’t even find one of those! Maybe I just entered the building at the wrong entrance, I don’t know. But as I was wandering around, looking at the different custom address plaques I was getting frustrated because I am sure that I was going around in circles for a while.

Finally I used my cell phone to call the doctor’s office and told them that I was hopelessly lost inside their complex, and they gave me directions on how to get to their office. I never realized before then exactly how important personalized address plaques could be for a business complex and their customers!

Future steel buildings

My wife and I have decided that we are going to put a large storage building out in the back yard. One large enough to be used as a two car garage and storage to boot. We’ve been taking a look at the code requirements and expense of having one stick built versus buying a kit from a company like Future Steel Buildings and have it delivered. One of the advantages of the Future steel buildings over a stick built wood building is that with a metal building there is never any concern about termites or carpenter ants or carpenter bees or woodpeckers destroying the building.

Having seen the front door of my mother-in-law’s house destroyed by carpenter bees, and my brother-in-law’s wood siding ruined by termites, I think that we will save ourselves a lot of aggravation by going with metal. Checking with the code enforcement officer of the town, there is nothing standing in the way of us getting a building permit for the building once we decide which one we are going to want to order. We will need a set of plans to show the town code inspector to make sure that they will be approved, but that should be as easy as pie. From what I understand their biggest concern is the snow load rating of the roof.
